SMILE AC:2 Pre Production. Evaluating and analysing the need for certain resources.

Evaluating and analysing the need for certain resources.

this post shows the research i have conducted on different components used for podcast production. this will help me so when it is time to record audio for my podcast i have a better understanding of the technology needed for clear quality audio.

Microphones

To record the audio for the podcast episode ill likely use the Rode NT1A, which is a diaphragm condenser microphone with a cardioid polar pattern. this is appropriate for podcast production because a cardioid polar range eliminates unwanted background noise. the audio is also clear and the microphone is affordable.

The difference between condenser and dynamic microphones

condenser microphones- Condenser microphones have a lightweight diaphragm which makes it great for picking up delicate and high frequency sounds such as voices, acoustic guitars other string instruments. the audio a condenser mic records is clean and smooth. this is not a suitable choice for loud audio recordings because a condenser mic would likely break trying to handle such high volumes.

Dynamic microphones -  Dynamic microphones are best for recording loud sounds such as heavy vocals and acoustic drums. this is because the wire coil inside the casing amplifies the diaphragm which produces a significantly lower output than a condenser microphone. Dynamic mics are also commonly used during live recordings because of how durable, reliable and able to handle very high volume sounds without breaking.

A condenser mic would be best suited for podcast production because they delicate and produce soft and clear audio and eliminates any background noise.

Why is it important to use a cradle mount and pop filter-  It is important to use a cradle mount and not to hold the microphone while using a condenser mic to reduce contact with the microphones which creates low frequency rumbles which can interfere with a recording.

Sound card-  An audio interface is a piece of equipment which takes sound from microphones, instruments and amplifiers and converts them into audio your computer can recognise. for example, if you wanted to record guitar audio you can connect the amplifier, the sound card and the computer and record straight into the computer which improves. quality and clarity.

if you turn up the gain on the audio interface too high, your audio will be noisy and distorted, which is good if you are wanting a distorted bass or guitar track but not so good if you're just recording audio for a podcast. However, if you turn the gain on the audio interface too low, your audio will be quiet and hard to understand

Logic Pro X- Logic Pro X is an excellent option for a DAW as it is easy to use and beginner friendly as there are a vast range of online tutorials. Logic Pro is also very affordable and has all of the necessary tools and features for quality editing.
